Mississauga Restoration Professionals Give Tips on Cleaning Fire Damage Residues

Cleaning Fire Damage Residues from Contents in Mississauga

The residues deposited after a fire in Mississauga coat both structural surfaces and various furnishings, household goods, and personal possessions in your home. We have many strategies for returning the contents and the building materials in your home back to pre-damaged condition. Some of the techniques and methods we can use on-site. Others are available at our production facility. We consider packing-out items to take advantage of the specialized equipment and our experienced contents technicians.

Dry Cleaning

When your belongings suffer from light to medium fire damage in your Mississauga dwelling, the first step is dry cleaning. We use a range of tools and air pressure to remove light, ashy soils. Sometimes dry cleaning clears loose debris as a preliminary step before other techniques. Tools and equipment used include:

  • Feather dusters
  • Dusting cloths
  • Dry cleaning sponges
  • Vacuuming
  • Pressurized air

Wet Cleaning

Moderate or heavy non-oily residues on your furnishings and belongings require cleaning with water or a water-based cleaning solution. The material must be durable enough to endure complete saturation without disassembling, stretching, shrinking, or otherwise distorting.

Foam Cleaning

Rather than soaking items, an adapted option is foam cleaning. Often used for cleaning upholstery, SERVPRO technicians develop a foam by agitating a water-based cleaning solution. We use a Tampico upholstery brush to dip into the foam and then dab the aerated suds onto the surface. Soil lifts off without significant wetting or color bleeding of delicate materials.

Spray and Wipe

A diluted cleaning solution sprays over residues and suspends the soiling. SERVPRO employees use cloths or sponges to wipe off the key and the dissolved or emulsified debris. The choice to spay and wipe limits the saturation but permits more of the surface to make contact with the cleaning solution than foaming cleaning.

Abrasive Cleaning

Two ways of using abrasive materials are helpful. SERVPRO workers can choose a cleaning product with abrasive ingredients. Or we can apply any cleaning solution with an abrasive material such as steel wool or a scrubbing pad. To avoid damaging the affected surface, we take great care with the abrasives, loosening residues but maintaining the integrity of the materials.

Immersion Cleaning

Submerging durable items into a cleaning solution contained in a tub or basin is immersion cleaning. After a dwell time, we use brushes or towels to remove the loosened fire damage debris. We train some of our SERVPRO technicians in ultrasonic cleaning. Articles are submerged in a tank of cleaning agents, and high-frequency sound waves create an emotional reaction, millions of bubbles imploding, resulting in high temperatures and microscopic jets of agitating and scrubbing solution.

Are Electrical Fires Common in Malton?

3/2/2022 (Permalink)

flames from a plug -in at a socket on a wall Electrical house fires can be very damaging to a Malton property, call SERVPRO to make it "Like it never even happened."

Electrical Fires Are a Common Cause of House Fires and Often Require Fire and Smoke Clean-up from Professional Services

Our homes are full of electrical devices. Cookers, televisions, sockets, and light switches are among the most common in our homes, but lithium-powered products like cell phones, laptops, and speakers have been added to the mix in recent years. If these electrical items are tampered with or malfunction, they can cause a property fire. Signs of faulty wiring or fire hazards in your home can include regular fuse or power outages, the need to daisy-chain extension cords, or having to switch one device off before turning on another. Devices can also cause fires due to their lithium batteries. The main concern is that these devices can combust rapidly if exposed to high temperatures for long periods. Should a fire happen, we can help you with:

  • Smoke and odour removal
  • Fire debris removal
  • Fire cleaning

Conducting fire and smoke clean up in your Malton home is driven by the type of fire and what materials burned. Electrical fires often result in wet, greasy smoke deposits because they are usually constructed from synthetic materials. Woods and other organic matter tend to burn quickly and leave dry smoke. One of the top methods for avoiding a fire is to keep potential fire hazards away from potential fuel sources. Leaving an active extension cord on soft furnishing, for example, can be a common cause of property fire. To repair property after an electrical fire, you may need solvent chemicals to remove certain smokes and alternative power sources for cleaning equipment.

  • Portable lighting powered by generators is necessary for properties where an electrical fire has resulted in a temporary power outage.
  • Dry solvent chemicals are frequently used to break down the bond between wet smokes and surfaces at a molecular level.
  • Enlisting an electrical repair professional is essential if the fire was caused by faulty wiring running through your home.

Faulty electrical equipment accounts for an estimated 50,000 fires each year in North America. Contact SERVPRO of North Mississauga for fire and smoke clean up at (905) 238-7376.

Does Kitchen Fire Damage in Mississauga Present Challenges?

1/30/2022 (Permalink)

a fire damaged kitchen with soot covering the furniture Regardless of the room that the fire affected, a quick response is warranted. Contact our SERVPRO technicians immediately after an event in your home.

Training and Equipment Support SERVPRO During Mississauga Kitchen Fire Clean Up

Your kitchen is at particular risk for fire damage in Mississauga. You and your family's safety are paramount, and job one is to get to safety. All it takes is a few seconds of inattention or an accidental tipping of a pan, and a gourmet meal can become the epicentre of a serious conflagration. Once the flames extinguish and you view the mess in your kitchen job two is to call SERVPRO.

Why Does Mississauga Fire Damage Require Professional Interventions?

Mississauga smoke and fire damage remediation involves cleaning up toxic residues, both airborne and on surfaces. The protein-based soot created in a kitchen fire adheres tightly to appliances, counters, floors, and more. The protein-based smoke and soot are incredibly malodorous, composed of a mix of vaporized dehydrated foods and rancid oils. Residues do not remain in the kitchen; they travel widely on superheated air currents throughout your home. SERVPRO professionals are familiar with the unique needs of kitchen fire damage restoration:

Constructing containment perimeters of heavy-duty plastic, using negative pressure air scrubbing systems to mitigate further drift of the soot and begin deodorization

Examining the characteristics and spread of the residues and the durability of the surfaces damaged to best match soiling with effective yet non-marring soot removal products, tools, and cleaning strategies

Implementing the expertly designed cleaning protocols, typically using solvents to emulsify the oil and protein-based coatings

Adding abrasives to the cleaning products or using tools such as steel wool, stiff-bristled brushes, scrapers, or other rough-surfaced devices to break the bond between the lacquer-like residues and the affected surfaces

Count on SERVPRO of North Mississauga after a household fire damages your kitchen and other spaces. Call (905) 238-7376 to schedule an assessment and emergency services.

SERVPRO Improves Fire Restoration Outcomes by Providing Technical Skills and Sophisticated Equipment

Even though fires are not an everyday event in homes, there is always a risk of one starting at your Mississauga home. Like most people, responding to a fire incident is not something you have at the top of your head, so you may not know what to do or what you can salvage once the flames die down.

The decisions you make when addressing fire damage at your Mississauga home depend on the resources you have and the extent of damages left. Professional help from SERVPRO is advantageous since we have state-of-the-art equipment that simplifies restoration or improves the chances of salvaging more items.

The main factors that determine the response include:

  • Various costs
  • Materials involved
  • Availability of skills and equipment

Different categories of costs are crucial when addressing fire damage. The cost of replacing the affected items is one such category. If the materials can be replaced cheaply, there is no need to waste time and money attempting restoration, especially if a positive outcome is not guaranteed. Soiled insulation is a perfect example to illustrate this since it is better to replace the top layers rather than spend time cleaning. Another cost-related issue is the time it might take to complete the restoration, especially if such effort might delay other restoration processes.

Sometimes materials dictate the fire restoration action you can take. Some materials may be delicate, and leaving them unaddressed can worsen the damage. For example, metallic trim such as hinges, door handles, and knobs might survive the fire but leaving them covered with soot increases chances of irreversible damage through corrosion. Our SERVPRO technicians pre-clean such vulnerable materials and apply a thin oil film before focusing on other aspects. Other materials might be too delicate to survive cleaning procedures. For instance, cleaning acoustic tile ceilings can permanently damage them due to over-wetting. Our technicians use specialized procedures such as peroxide active cleaning.

SERVPRO is an Expert Service that Can Help Malton Residents with House Fire Cleanup

Malton is the sixth-largest city in Canada, rivaling Toronto as a must-visit destination in North America. The town, a part of Ontario, is a dining center that offers up fantastic local produce alongside progressive arts and culture, which has become Malton's trademark. The mixture of traditional activities, outdoor scenery, and thriving contemporary culture has seen Malton develop into a top tourist destination for those visiting Canada. The region effortlessly brings together its traditional tea-rooms and historical sites with modern shopping and cultural activity. Each year thousands of visitors descend on Malton to experience a less touristy Canadian culture than that offered by its rivals Toronto and Niagara.

Historical buildings in Malton date back to the nineteenth century, with some of the highlights being the traditional Tea Rooms at Robinson Bray House and the Georgian-styled Benares House. The Bray House, in particular, opens out onto a quaint main street featuring many historic buildings while in-house dining is catered for by local pastry chef Melanie Howsam. Celebration Square is at the heart of Malton, which provides free entertainment for the whole family. Highlights include the numerous music festivals that take place annually and enormous ice skating rinks that open throughout the winter season. Typical food options include Egyptian and Japanese cuisine.

  • The Casa Loma is a stunning period revival of Gothic Architecture that opens to the public as a tourist attraction throughout the year. Initially built in 1914, the castle-like mansion was the permanent residence of Sir Henry Pellat. The adjacent gardens are also open to the public throughout the year.
  • Canada's Wonderland is one of Canada's largest theme parks, with 134 hectares of rollercoaster rides, water slides, and entertainment. The park opens daily during the summer season, running until Labour Day, when it closes for the winter season.
  • The Fo Guang Shan Temple is a highlight of the local culture, which runs regular tours for visitors. The tours comprise an exploration of ancient Chinese philosophy, art, and dining rooms. The temple remains a fully-active Buddhist temple for Malton's Chinese residents.

What Is The Most Effective Way To Remove Odour During Fire Restoration?

3/5/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO office You want a trusted team of experts with the equipment your property needs after a fire incident occurs. Call SERVPRO right away.

SERVPRO Combines Different Approaches for Thorough Deodorisation of Mississauga Homes

Bad odour is one expected outcome of fire incidents since odorous materials accumulate in open and hidden areas of the property. Some of the odour may dissipate after cleanup, but in most cases, further intervention is necessary to remove all lingering traces of odour.

Deodorisation is the fire restoration procedure Mississauga residences require to regain their preloss state. Like other restoration processes, a single deodorisation method is not likely to deliver the best outcome. Professional restoration services combine several approaches to ensure all odour sources are addressed. Typical methods include:

  • Air filtration
  • Thermal Fogging
  • Use of activated oxygen

Since smoke is made up of various substances, including fine residues and vapour, some remain suspended in the air making the property smell.  One way our SERVPRO technicians eliminate such substances from the air is by running air filtration devices with HEPA filters in the affected rooms to capture residues as small as 0.3 microns.

Odour molecules might also be embedded deep into porous materials making it difficult to remove them. Our technicians use approaches that overcome the physical challenge of reaching the odour. Thermal fogging helps deliver odour counteractants deep into materials. Alternatively, we use activated oxygen from ozone and hydroxyl generators to break down odour molecules.

SERVPRO of North Mississauga goes the extra mile during fire restoration to leave your property odour-free. Call (905) 238-7376 for assistance.

Mississauga Has A Long History and Plenty Of Modern Amenities

Mississauga enjoys a beautiful location close to Toronto and on the shore of magnificent Lake Ontario. Mississauga is a fascinating city with a multicultural popular, and thriving business district. At the last census, it had a population of 721,599.

Being so close to Toronto makes Mississauga popular as a commuter town – and it has a lot to offer residents and visitors in its own right. Mississauga's multicultural vibe makes sense when you consider that, historically, the city was always composed of different communities.

A City Of Many Villages

In 1805, officials from York (that is now called Toronto) purchased 84,000 acres of land from the Mississaugas (the native people of the area.) That parcel of land became Toronto Township, which despite its name, is not part of Toronto.

Mississauga continued to grow throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Many villages sprung up in the area, which was mostly agricultural. There were many fruit orchards in the area, plus a handful of brickworks and grist mills. This collection of villages officially became a town in 1968. Prior to becoming a town, there was a public consultation on the new town's name, with officially eventually choosing "Mississauga" over "Sheridan."

Mississauga is unusual in consisting of so many villages joined together under one name. Today, this history can be seen in the number of vibrant and different communities that make up the city. These include:

  • Erin Mills, a large, suburban district that was precisely planned out as a new town and incorporates suburban living and a thriving business community.
  • Churchill Meadows, a modern and cosmopolitan community with a striking visual character, thanks to the classic touches the architects added to the contemporary homes.
  • Port Credit sits on Lake Ontario's shores and includes a heritage district with strong ties to its past. There was a trading post on the site in the late eighteenth century, and the area has been occupied ever since.
  • Malton was built on a historic settlement site and is now a modern working-class neighbourhood with strong ties to the aviation industry and a strong sports community.
  • Clarkson is a middle and upper-class district with historic buildings and museums that link it to its more industrial past. Clarkson started as a small settlement based around its post office (which was operated by members of the Clarkson family for 45 years) and is now a lively community.

 Enjoy Shopping In Mississauga

Historic Mississauga also enjoys many modern amenities. The city is an excellent destination for those who love to shop, thanks to its range of malls, including:

  • Square One Shopping Centre, which is the largest mall in Ontario and the second-largest in all of Canada. The centre boasts over 360 units and welcomes 24 million visitors yearly.
  • Erin Mills Town Centre is the second largest mall in Mississauga and is conveniently served by several road links and a bus station located behind the centre. It is also famous as a filming location for several movies, including Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and even a game show (Instant Cash.)
  • Dixie Outlet Mall is the largest enclosed outlet mall in Canada and contains many brand names such as Guess, Levis, Calvin Klein, and Nike.

A Derailed Train Gives Mississauga An Explosive History

Mississauga has not been without potential disasters. In 1979, a 106-car train derailed while carrying explosives and chemicals such as caustic soda, propane, and chlorine. The tragedy happened because an incorrectly lubricated bearing on one of the wheels heated up. At first, the friction caused sparks and smoke, and then it drove an axle and a pair of wheels to fall off entirely.

The damaged undercarriage derailed the train, and several propane tanks exploded, causing a knock-on effect that ruptured several other tanks filled with dangerous materials. The resulting explosion was so powerful that it could be seen from 60 miles away and sent a fireball 5,000 ft into the air.

Thanks to some quick thinking and a suggestion from his father-in-law (who happened to be the train engineer), the brakeman was able to shut an air brake angle spigot. This let him detach some of the cars and move the front part of the train down the line and away from danger.

Although firefighters were able to cool the tanks, there was a release of chlorine into the air. Concerned for residents' safety, officials ordered 200,000 people to evacuate their homes. The Mississauga evacuation was the largest in peace-time North American until Hurricane Katrina. In the aftermath, officials decreed that any train carrying hazardous chemicals through populated areas in North America must be fitted with a hotbox detector to detect rising heat.

The Mississauga derailment is also known as the Mississauga miracle because, despite the 5000 ft fireball and dangerous chemicals, no lives were lost.

The people who were evacuated during the Mississauga derailment were most likely worried about their homes catching fire. Thankfully train derailments are rare, but there are still several things that can cause a fire in the house:

  • Open flames such as hearth fires, candles, and oil burners.
  • Accidents in the kitchen, such as cooking fires or oil spills.
  • Incorrect wiring or damaged appliance leads.
  • A faulty heater or a heater being covered up.

In the event of a fire, SERVPRO is here to help. We aim to restore your home to its pre-fire condition, leaving it, "Like it never even happened." We train our technicians to handle smoke and soot cleanup.

Because we focus on cleaning rather than replacing items, calling us means giving your belongings the best chance of rescue. We can clean soot from furniture, keepsakes, clothes, linen, drapes, and toys. We know that lingering smoke smells are a problem after a fire, so we also take care of deodorization to leave your home fresh.

Do not despair if a fire strikes your home. SERVPRO of North Mississauga will take care of every aspect of fire and smoke cleanup. Call us at (905) 238-7376.

Mississauga Residents Are Concerned About Fire Damage To Clothes and Cosmetics.

As anyone living in Mississauga knows, your clothes and cosmetics are a vital part of your day! Whether you are high fashion or comfortable and casual, getting dressed is part of every day. Clothes can be costly, so naturally, you want to take good care of them.

If your Mississauga home suffers fire damage, you might wonder whether to try and salvage your clothes and cosmetics, and linen and accessories. There is quite a lot of conflicting information out there. Let us take a look at the SERVPRO approach.

Is it safe to use cosmetics after a fire?

SERVPRO recommends you toss all exposed or soiled cosmetics after a fire. We understand this is frustrating as cosmetics are not cheap, and you do not want to pay to replace all of your makeup, shampoo, soap, and other personal hygiene items. However, even if cosmetics look undamaged, the fire and heat can affect them:

  • Heat can damage plastic cases and break their seals so that microbes and other nasties can get in
  • High heat can also change the chemical composition of cosmetics and make them unsafe to use
  • Tiny particles of fire-fighting chemicals can penetrate cosmetics packaging – these can irritate your skin and scalp

Whether your cosmetics are lightly smoke-damaged or look as though they have escaped unscathed, it is safer to replace them.

What about my clothes?

Some restoration companies will tell you that you cannot save your clothes after fire damage because of soot particles and fire-fighting chemicals. However, SERVPRO of North Mississauga uses a uniquely powerful washing system called ESPORTA, capable of handling soot damage and lingering chemicals.

The ESPORTA system is suitable for:

  • Clothing items of all kinds, from casual jeans to smart business suits
  • Textiles such as duvets, blankets, towels, and other linens
  • Accessories including coats, hats, scarves, and canvas shoes
  • Sports equipment such as jerseys or padded hockey equipment

If your clothes are visibly burned (as opposed to soot damaged), it is usually best to dispose of them. However, for soot damage, ESPORTA can help restore your clothes “Like it never even happened.”

Why does SERVPRO use ESPORTA?

Most traditional washing machines rely on agitation to clean clothes. The engine spins, tumbles, or paddles the clothing items while soaking them in water and detergent. This method has been used since before the second world war and is inefficient.

ESPORTA uses a hydraulic cleaning action, which pushes the detergents into the fabrics and pushes out the contaminants. This is much more effective than other methods – the ESPORTA system cleans up to 90% of items with soot, grime, mould, or odour damage. And it does not merely leave the things clean – it leaves them food-grade clean.

ESPORTA has other advantages, too:

  • It uses detergents that are free from dangerous solvents and phosphates, so it is kinder to the environment
  • It uses as much as 50% less water than traditional wet-washing methods, so it reduces water waste
  • The hydraulic action is much gentler on your clothes than conventional agitation

When will I get my clothes back?

SERVPRO technicians will remove your damaged clothes and textiles from your home as soon as we can, to prevent further soot stains. We take your clothes to our off-site cleaning facility. We aim to return your items within two weeks – we also have an emergency 72-hour service for essential clothing so you can go on with your life.

We take inventory of all textiles and clothes before we pack them out and move them to our cleaning facility. You can rest assured that we will return every item in better condition than it left.

What about drapes and other textiles?

Your clothes and linens are not the only delicate items that can be affected by soot damage. We can also restore larger things like drapes, mattresses, and rugs. We also take care of fire-damaged furniture.

Our policy is to restore and clean wherever possible, and only replace items when there is no other option. This is more cost-effective for you because it is cheaper to clean items than it is to buy new ones. Salvaging everyday objects can also help with the stress of fire damage because the losses do not feel as massive when you still have some well-loved personal belongings and keepsakes around.

We clean drapes and furniture using a range of cleaning methods, such as HEPA vacuuming, hot water extraction, and ultrasonic cleaning. We can also clean and refinish lightly damaged wood surfaces and scrub soot from metal. We dry each item after cleaning and deodorize it to leave it fresh.

Take Advantage of SERVPRO's Specialized Production Facility Resources While Keeping Your Belongings Safe and Secure After a Toronto Residential Fire

Your furnishings, household goods, and personal possessions can take a real beating during a Toronto fire and the recovery efforts. Smoke, soot, and firefighting water and chemicals coat and soak deeply into your home's contents, threatening to damage them severely. Not only is the possibility of replacing all these items an expensive proposition, but much of the property also has sentimental value.

Why Are Pack-Outs Considered After Fire Damage?

When fire damages your Toronto home, everything feels very chaotic. We recommend moving items to our production facility for two reasons:

  • Specialized resources and skilled interventions are available in a less stressful environment, allowing our contents technicians space and time to assess, plan, and implement restoration efforts.
  • Transporting the property out of your home permits the on-site crews to concentrate on mitigation and remediation of the structural components affected by the fire, unencumbered by the need to safeguard and continually shift your belongings during water removal, smoke and soot cleanup, and deodorization.

How Can I Trust That My Fire-Damaged Property Is Safe When Packed Out of My House?

Agreeing to a pack-out of your possessions might increase worry about losing control of your treasures. To answer that concern, SERVPRO uses a unique Contents Claim Inventory Service (CCIS) to track the articles packed and transported out of the fire-damaged spaces in your home. The system uses a combination of documentation strategies to ensure your property is monitored and secure:

  • Traditional lists
  • Digital photographs
  • Barcoding

Does a Pack-Out Provide Accurate Evidence for Insurance Claims?

As we process each item, the CCIS permits us to document every article's condition and follow each as we use a range of techniques to return it to preloss function and appearance. If an item is unrestorable, notes from our assessment and efforts to clean, dry, disinfect, and deodorize can convince an adjuster to pay for the loss and replacement.

The team at SERVPRO of North Mississauga is ready to take whatever precautions are reasonable to make it "Like it never even happened," including a pack out of fire-damaged and soiled contents. Call us at (905) 238-7376 to evaluate and recommend the best practices for your circumstances.

How Should I Clean My Smoke Damaged Home?

Fire Damaged Home in Toronto Fire Damage? Call SERVPRO Today!

SERVPRO Techs Have the Professional Equipment and Specialised Cleaning Agents to Help Toronto Homes After a Fire Loss

Smoke damage can be a very frustrating challenge to clean up on your own. The internet has a large number of DIY methods, but the truth is, if the incorrect cleaning method gets used on smoke residues, it can make the problem worse or cause the item getting cleaned to become unrestorable. This type of cleanup is best to outsource to a professional restoration services company.

Is It True Fire Damage Can Leave Behind Different Types of Smoke Damage?

The ability to successfully clean up fire damage in Toronto homes hinges on the ability also to remove the smoke residues left behind. Some of the vital steps to smoke damage removal include:

  • The testing of the residue to determine the type
  • Use of specific cleaning methods and tools for dry smoke
  • Implementation of cleaning agents with solvents for wet smoke

What to Expect During the Fire Loss Mitigation Process

When the SERVPRO techs arrive on site, they get to work immediately to clean up the property. One of the first actions is containment around the loss area. This is necessary to prevent the spread of soot throughout the home. Then charred items without restoration potential get removed.

As the techs go through the site, they inspect each item, and if it shows promise for restoration, it gets taken to a cleaning station for detailed handling to remove the soot and smoke residues.

Cleaning Techniques for Walls and Ceilings

Smoke residues left on walls and ceilings can get categorised into three groups, and each type has its own unique needs for cleaning.

  • Smoke webs appear in the upper corners of a room and look like black cobwebs
  • Dry smoke is light and looks like a fine, black powder on surfaces
  • Wet smoke is the most difficult to remove and has the appearance of an oily or greasy black substance that smears when wiped

Choosing the correct solution type is crucial. SERVPRO technicians perform testing on the smoke residues as well as the surfaces they are cleaning to ensure the selected cleaning agent does not mar the surface. The removal of smoke damage is often a multi-layered process. For example, dry smoke residues should not come into contact with wet cleaning solutions as they can get driven deeper into surfaces and cause more loss.

The techs primarily use dry cleaning sponges to lift the dry smoke off the surface (usually walls and ceilings) and then follow up with liquid cleaners to wipe up any remaining stains.

Air Quality Measures During Fire Loss Cleanup

Soot particles carry odor wherever they are. SERVPRO techs use air scrubbers throughout the mitigation process to capture any airborne particulate in its HEPA filtration.

What is the Fastest Way to Clear a Home from Kitchen Fire Debris?

5/29/2020 (Permalink)

"We can help" We know the steps to get your home back from fire damage.

Residents of Mississauga Trust SERVPRO to Provide Honest, Efficient Fire Debris Removal Services.

Do I need to arrange for transport and disposal of non-salvageable items?

Our service covers both the removal and safe disposal of fire debris at a Mississauga waste facility. Depending on the breadth of damage, SERVPRO can arrange dumpster rental on your behalf to place non-salvageable materials during restoration using trusted suppliers. Our technicians are capable of thoroughly inspecting your property to designate which materials are restorable and which need disposal. We can remove charred cabinet doors, drawers fittings, and electrical outlets from the property as part of the service.

Is fire debris dangerous?

Combusting materials can release monoxides and other harmful gases. However, these usually disperse quickly within the first few hours. There may still be hazards in the property, including sharp edges, loose fittings, malfunctioning appliances, or slip and trip hazards. Inhaling airborne soots or ash can also be an issue when removing fittings or disturbing the affected area. Wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), including respiration masks and heavy-duty gloves, can help to protect restorers during the removal of charred items. There are several safety steps essential to limiting potential dangers:

Shutting off power and gas supply to the affected area

High temperatures and pressure can damage wiring, appliances, and supply valves. Employing emergency gas shutoffs and cutting electrical supply to the affected area is an essential step in ensuring the safety of the property.

Awareness of potentially hazardous materials

Buildings pre-1980 can contain dangerous materials in their construction. These materials may include asbestos or lead-based paints, which should not be disturbed without professional abatement services. Our team can procure specialists for the removal of any materials that they suspect contain harmful substances.

Structural weakening or insecurity?

Kitchen fittings can loosen under the intense heat and pressure of a fire. When joints weaken, there is a high chance that fittings can collapse. This weakening may occur when cabinet doors or shelves are taken from their fittings.

Are charred building materials non-salvageable?

In some situations, building materials or cabinet fittings are entirely or partly salvageable. Charring on wooden frames, metal appliances or doors may only have damage on grains close to the surface. Sandblasting equipment sends thousands of tiny grains against a surface to peel away surface damages. On woods, sandblasting works in a similar way to using sandpaper, providing a clean, smooth surface that can be repainted or refinished. Often, cabinet doors can be removed and replaced while restoring the interior of the cabinet using sand or soda blasting to reduce expenses.

What services are available for the replacement of non-salvageable contents and fittings?

- Reinstallation of doors, cabinets, and drawers as well as venting ducts, sockets, and light fittings

- Base-coating of walls and ceiling using an odor sealing paint

- Safe, professional removal of non-salvageable appliances providing a clean space for new appliances to be installed

Can you begin installing replacement items immediately after debris removal?

Before the restoration procedure begins, our technicians need to ensure that the space is clean and free of odors. Once the debris is removed, technicians can set to work on burn-marks, soiling, and sanding of surfaces. Using chemical agents, we can remove wet smoke residues from the affected area and bring in ultra-low-volume fogging equipment to tackle odors. We can only begin the restoration service once space is returned to a sanitary state.

What chemical cleaning agents should I use on smoke and soot residues?

- Clean, warm water can help to remove light to moderate soiling from walls, surfaces, and ceilings

- Water-based solvents are effective at dissolving certain soots that may have bonded to a surface

- Oil-based solvents for soiling that has a greasy texture

How can I prove non-salvageable items to my insurance adjuster?

In some situations, restoration may already be underway before you have a chance to speak with an insurance adjuster. Any items that are removed from the property by SERVPRO technicians are meticulously cataloged and are included in your service paperwork. This inventory can be passed onto an insurer as proof of non-salvageable items, if necessary, at the end of service.

Where can I dispose of fire debris?

Fire debris can be hazardous and can release ash or soots into the environment. For these reasons, it is not appropriate to use regular waste services for the disposal of charred or burnt materials. These materials need disposal at an approved waste facility or landfill in the area. SERVPRO can transport any debris from your property to a facility for safe disposal.

Clearing your property of unwanted debris after a kitchen fire is most efficient when using professional services. Contact SERVPRO of North Mississauga at (905) 238-7376.

Fire & Smoke Restoration Technicians (FSRT)

We ensure that every member of our responding team helping in the restoration and recovery of your fire-damaged residence gets thoroughly qualified and continues their training in the fire restoration field. Beyond their accreditation as FSRTs through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), our SERVPRO professionals have continued their training and educational opportunities through hands-on experience building exercises, in-house coursework, and online classes to introduce our technicians to the latest trends and equipment in fire restoration.

Experienced technicians are only a fraction of the equation for successful fire restoration and recovery work. How these FSRTs respond in the field when it is your Mississauga home and belongings on the line is where it counts. Here are some of the procedures you can expect to see when our SERVPRO team gets to work on restoring your fire-damaged residence.

Fire Debris Removal

Among the first things that you can expect when our qualified restoration professionals first reach your property to begin emergency services, or mitigation practices is the removal of debris on the floors of the house. Throughout the damaged areas, structural degradation or burned contents heap on the floors and require removal and discarding. Cleaning up these piles and heaps of ash and material remnants can help out the property in multiple ways, even before establishing the full measure of how damaged the house has become.

Shoveling is a typical response to these rubbish piles, though dry and wet vacuuming can also get used depending on where these debris deposits exist. Removing these threats before other mitigation tasks can ultimately save time on restoration by:

•    Reducing the severity of harsh odors
•    Reducing the concentration of soot
•    Limiting the circulation of debris and particulates in the house

Indoor Air Quality Improvement and Odor Control

The environment that our SERVPRO professionals enter for restoration and recovery is one of the first indicators of the severity of the damage that our team must address. A high concentration of soot and smoke particles in the air can make it hazardous to be in the recovery areas without the appropriate personal protective equipment like respirators. Improving indoor air quality (IAQ) and reducing lingering odors involves the use of sophisticated tools and devices.

Reducing airborne debris most often involves HEPA-filtration equipment like air scrubbers. These are the most commonly used environment cleaning tools because they offer a steady capture of soot, microbial threats, and other potential contaminants as small as 0.3 microns.

There are numerous tools for reducing odors in your Mississauga residence after fire extinguishment. Cleaning and other restorative practices can reduce the severity of smoke and burning odors, though neutralization of these scents often involves one or more of our most frequently used deodorizing systems:

•    Thermal/ULV foggers
•   Hydroxyl generators
•    Ozone machines/chambers

Controlled Demolition

Often the emergency services that our SERVPRO team provides Mississauga homes following fire losses involve real-time construction decisions, including the damage to individual structural elements like walls, flooring, and ceilings. With an in-house team of licensed contractors, we can help both residences and commercial properties to remove compromised materials and make full-scale restoration possible. By allowing our contractors to perform controlled demolition, we can only remove areas of the house that need it – saving time and money on reconstruction to come.

Cleaning Strategies

Cleaning surfaces and contents is not a straightforward process when following fire losses, as the inappropriate strategies can permanently stain and mar affected materials. Careful consideration must get made on the ideal approaches to remove soot and smoke residues from various surfaces. In some situations, agitative cleaning practices using steel wool or hard-bristled brushes might be best to loosen sediment and damage layers, and other times more intricate cleaning like emulsification through water-based chemical agents must occur to clear installed materials of these superficial damages.

Content Management

How your belongings get treated during the restoration of fire losses can help to determine the extent of loss that you experience. While walls can get rebuilt and materials replaced, many of the possessions that you have are sentimentally valuable – meaning that no monetary evaluation can get made to replace them at a later time. How responding technicians like our SERVPRO team address these concerns can better protect your property and what matters most.

We have in-house and off-site cleaning practices that can get chosen on an item-by-item basis. Severely damaged contents that can still get restored often become part of the pack-out process and taken to our nearby facility for cleaning and restoration solutions that are more intricate and involved than we can perform in the residence.

Fire losses can be one of the most destructive forces to a healthy life in your home or business, but our SERVPRO of North Mississauga team can help with efficient restoration solutions utilizing our premier training through the IICRC and our extensive inventory of recovery tools and products. No matter how severe a loss incident might initially appear, our professionals can make it “Like it never even happened,” by calling (905) 238-7376.

Fire Prevention Tips for Smokers in Mississauga Homes

12/29/2019 (Permalink)

cigarette burning down Smoking In Your Mississauga Home Is A Huge Fire Hazard, SERVPRO Wants To Ensure Fire Safety For You And Your Family.

Fire Prevention Tips for Your Mississauga Home if you are a Smoker

While smoking is a bad habit that is terrible for your health, we’re not here to lecture you about that. If you’re going to continue smoking, we’re not going to change your minds. Rather, we’re here to talk to you about fire safety. In all eight countries that report fire statistics, smoking is the leading cause of residential or total fire death in all of them. That’s why practicing proper fire safety as a smoker is critical. Keep reading to find the best fire prevention tip for smokers.

Fire Prevention Tips for Smokers

One of the best fire prevention tips for smokers is to smoke outside. However, that doesn’t work for everyone. If you want to continue to smoke inside, we suggest using the following tips to prevent fire hazards.

  • Don’t smoke in bed. Falling asleep with a cigarette in hand is one of the leading causes of residential fires.
  • Completely extinguish your cigarette. Small embers from your cigarette could cause a fire. Make sure to put them out well, preferably in sand or water.
  • Don’t smoke near oxygen tanks. They are very flammable and can cause more severe fires.
  • Try not to smoke when tired. Even if you’re not in bed, it’s possible you could nod off in a chair and drop your cigarette on the floor or furniture.
  • Use fire-safe cigarettes. Fire-safe cigarettes will have the letters FSC above the barcode. These cigarettes are made to extinguish more quickly when not being puffed on. Therefore, if you forget about it or fall asleep, they are more likely to go out than catch the house on fire.

If You Cannot Smoke Outside, Smoke Safely Inside

Since many fire deaths are caused by smoking and cigarettes, practicing the above fire prevention tips for smokers can help save your life. It’s most important to properly put out your cigarettes when done with them, never smoke in bed, and avoiding smoking when you are tired.

If you do happen to experience fire damage, SERVPRO of North Mississauga has a fully trained 24 Hour Emergency Response Team to Help.

Wood Burning Fireplace Mississauga Fireplace Safety

Fireplace Safety Tips and How to Avoid Hazards

Now that the weather is getting colder and Christmas is almost upon us, you are probably thinking of using your fireplace again.  Not only does it add ambiance to the room, but it helps keep the heating bills down.  Before you light it up (or even if you already have), here are some tips that will help keep you and your family safe.

Use Dry Cured Wood

Make sure your wood is split and has been cured for at least 12 months.  It is okay to cover the top of the wood pile, but make sure the sides are left open to help dry the wood.  Green wood causes smoke which will cause soot in the chimney

Don’t Burn Anything but Firewood

If you are tempted to burn old lumber, crates, plastic or paper that has been lying around.  Don’t!  Items that are not meant to be burned contain chemicals that are released when exposed to heat.  Stick with your firewood.  Fire starter logs are okay if you use only one.

Make Sure the Damper is Open

This sounds like a no brainer, but after not using the fireplace for a while, people sometimes forget to open the damper or the flue.  If the damper helps pull the smoke up the chimney, otherwise it will get very smoky inside.  You can use a flashlight to check if the damper is open.

Clear the Area Around the Fireplace

Make sure there is nothing flammable near the fireplace.  Furniture, dog beds, drapes, newspapers etc. can catch on fire.  These items are potentially flammable and if a piece of wood pops and throws a spark, they could catch on fire.

Here are some other tips that will help you have a safer fireplace:

  • Clean ashes from previous fires
  • Have the chimney checked once a year by a professional
  • Install a chimney cap
  • If you have a gas fireplace, make sure the switch is child proof
  • Use a safety screen
  • Keep fireplace tools out of reach of children
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector
  • Keep a fire extinguisher on hand
  • If you have bifold glass doors make sure they are open when the fire is burning

Keep these tips in mind to have a safe and enjoyable winter season with your fireplace.
